1. Determine Eligibility:
- You are a direct descendant of a Revolutionary War Patriot.
- The SAR does not restrict membership based on race, age, color, religion, national origin, or residency.
- Your Revolutionary War Patriot ancestor must be your great-great grandfather or great-great grandmother of some degree.
- Plural marriage families are not excluded from SAR membership.
- Proving bloodline descent from a patriot ancestor to yourself is essential for SAR membership. Legitimacy through marriage is not a factor; appropriate proof of descendancy is crucial
2. Confirm Patriot Ancestry:
- Your patriot ancestor must have participated in one or more of the following types of service during the Revolutionary War:
- Signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Mecklenburg Declaration of 1775, the Albemarle Declaration of 1779, or the Cumberland Compact of 1780.
- Member of any of the Continental Congresses.
- Rendered material aid, such as supplying goods, lending money, or any other support that furthered the cause.
- Served in the military or navy during the specified dates.
- Participated in events like the Boston Tea Party, Kaskaskia Campaign, Galvez Expedition, Cherokee Expedition, or the Edenton Tea Party.
- Defended forts and frontiers or served as a ranger.
- Was a prisoner of war.
- Rendered civil service under the Colonies during the specified dates.
3. Obtain Acceptable Documentation:
- Gather appropriate SAR acceptable documentation to confirm your direct descent from your Revolutionary War Patriot ancestor.
- Your local SAR chapter can assist you in fulfilling this requirement.
4. Find Sponsors:
- You must be sponsored by two current SAR members.
- Reach out to your local SAR chapter to connect with sponsors.
